Princes of the Apocalypse

Session 37

The Seekers left their small island refuge to head out of the plunging torrents. They swam a short ways against the sluggish current before finding the cavern with the stairs through which they entered the cave system. They climbed out, only to find that Morbeoth was gone and only a scrap of Nessa’s magic rope remained. The group then found pieces of the rope strung out in a path, leading them west of the caves. They followed the trail into a room full of fungi. Nessa ignored the tracks made in the mud and ran to the next piece of rope in the middle of the path. There, she was assaulted by violet fungi, reaching out with their decay inducing tentacles. She turned into a flying snake and fled. The rest of the team found that the trail backtracked and continued via shelf fungi along the wall of the room. They continued following the tracks and rope bits out into a room with a statue and an altar that was unrecognizable. Lantian and Flint examined the statue, particularly the head-sized purple gemstone set where its face should be. While they did this, Brenna snuck up the next hallway to spy on the next room. As Lantian extricated the stone and felt a curse narrowly miss him, Brenna found Gar and several cult lackeys standing at a much more ominous alter with a sacrifice waiting at the foot of its pedestal. The room was surrounded with ponds of burning, oily water. Brenna reported back and the party worked out a plan to have Brenna and Nessa sneak into a vantage point and then Lantian and Flint enter to attempt parley. This failed, however, when Gar spotted Brenna and began to talk with her. He asked her to bring her friends and join his cause, even as Morbeoth screamed for them to be killed. Lantian and Flint joined Brenna and said they would not join because Gar would require them to kill the sacrifice to prove their loyalty. A fight ensued as Brenna climbed a wall to fire arrows, Nessa heated the metal of Gar’s claw, Lantian rushed in to the fray with a summoned elemental, and Flint blasted away with his eldritch magics.

The group floated north out of the water node and went up a waterfall into a very large and stormy cavern. Through the downpour, they could make out several wrecked ships. As they neared the ships, the party saw a large serpent looking beast rise from one of the ships. Then, several more heads rose from the ship as the huge hydra showed itself. Lantian and Nessa rushed forward as Flint and Brenna took up defensible positions on other ships. Nessa grappled the hydra to the mast of a ship while Lantian hit it with a flaming blast. The team took the hydra down with surprising speed and efficiency, fast enough to return to their bubbles and continue floating north. The next room was full of wavy, deep waters that Lantian left his bubble to explore. The bubbles began to circle a point in the middle of the room when an illusion of an aboleth rose from the water. It told them that they must come to it for aid against the water cult. It warned them that if they ignored it then all they love would be consumed by water. This statement shook Nessa and Flint badly. The bubbles then continued northward and the team came to a small island and a split in the channel. They exited their bubbles and deliberated on which way they should go. Lantian eventually convinced the group to continue looking for Gar, but Nessa told him that it would be on his head should the evils the aboleth described some to pass. They then rested, though not uneventfully. A water weird attacked in the midst of their rest, though the team used Nessa’s giant snake form as a defensive perimeter from which to combat the elemental.

The Seekers continued on through the tunnels in their magic floating bubbles until they reached a large cavern with three waterfalls flowing into it. In the middle of the lake was a spire topped with a flat island. Floating above the island was a large, dark, watery globe. They group recognized it as being similar to the air node they had encountered before. As their bubbles floated closer, they also noticed a water elemental on the island. They prepared to engage it in combat as the bubbles began to arrive in the chamber and burst. As the fight began, sharks came up at the smell of blood and began to attack as well. The group fended off the beasts and subdued the elemental. They then all climbed to the top of the island and took a short rest. Nessa decided to stick her head into the globe of water and was hurt by the incredible pressure, terrible cold, and generally unforgiving environment similar to the bottom of the ocean. The group then decided that they needed to continue to explore (in search of Gar and of the creature sending them visions). They jumped in some available floating bubbles and continued on their way.

The Seekers made their way down in to the Fane of the Elemental Eye from the entrance in the Temple of the Crushing Wave and continued following the sloping river path toward the Plunging Torrents. They finally came to the waterfall and decided that they could take it from here without Morbeoth. They knocked him unconscious and left him tied up near the steps to the Plunging Torrents. They made their way down in to the underground cavern and discovered a giant floating orb of water hovering over the lake. Lantian was the first to investigate and found that when he touched the orb he was drawn into it and it began to float away. He quickly swam out of the orb and it continued on its way as another began to rise from the lake. Then, Lantian decided to test his theory about a magical effect he thought he felt in the orb. When he got in the next orb, he took a breath and found that he had the ability to breath the water in the globe. At this point, the team decided that the globes must be a means of conveyance and all jumped in them.

The Seekers, now in the room or Thuluna, begin to discuss Morbeoth. The characters tell Thuluna that Morbeoth tried to get them to kill her. She then tells them that she just wishes to create a place where monsters can have their own land and live in peace. She offers to the party that she will cooperate with them and be peaceful if they kill Morbeoth and advocate for her followers to have a land of their own. The party accepts, though are still wary of Thuluna’s motives and plans. The party made their way back toward Morbeoth’s workshop (with Grug as their escort) and made it in through the back entrance. There they found Morbeoth waiting for proof of their success against Thuluna. The party instead fought him and his guards, swiftly defeating them. The party then tried to interrogate Morbeoth, but every time they ungagged him he tried to escape with the Misty Step spell. So, the party used him to point the way through nods and grunts. They left his workshop and swam across an underground lake towards the stairs heading down to the next level of the dungeon. When they got out of the water, they found the room with the stairs with an insectoid creature guarding the steps. Lantian and Flint went in a tried to gain access, answering the guardian’s three questions. Although they got close, they failed the final question but signaled their other allies with their signal word, “peaches”. The party dispatched of the mezzoloth and continued on their way to the cult leader (guided by Morbeoth).

The Seekers, caught by the unwieldy bugbear ambush, handily fought their way out. The group then pushed on into the next room which turned out to be an arcane workshop with a grumpy wizard and a host of guards. He directed them to head east to take care of a hag problem which the party grudgingly left to check out. After leaving they found the door to the workshop barred they tried to circle around but only found the

They party , still recovering from their battle with Aerisi, decided to make their way back to Red Larch. They set off with Leana in tow and headed out uneventfully toward Feathergale Spire. On the way, the party found a chest left in the temple that they had not seen before. They puzzled over it for a bit, but then when Lantian opened it he found several gifts and a note from his father. With this new knowledge and equipment, the party continued on, reaching Feathergale Spire by nightfall. They were heartily welcomed because they brought good news of the cult’s spread being slowed. The Seekers also told the aarakocra warband that they could go home because reinforcements would be sent to protect the spire. The aarakocra were very happy to be able to go home and held a feast that night in honor of the Seekers. During this time, Lantian spoke with Leizhu and learned of the Tranquil Waters Monastery and that the monks there knew a method to travel quickly by the river. Leizhu told Lantian that he had proven himself and that upon visiting he would be admitted to the monastery. In the morning, the seekers headed for Red Larch with Leana, Leizhu, and Nerise in tow. Leana told the group she left behind some caches and maps within the caves of the cult temples. She decided to train Brenna in the roguish arts to allow her to recognize these hidden caches and to help her overcome some locks and other obstacles. When the group arrived at Red Larch, they were greeted as returning heroes. Nerise was reunited with her husband, the townsfolk were happy to see the Seekers still alive, and Leana told the group she would get ahold of her friend Templeton in Westbridge to see what aid he might be able to offer. The group then learned disheartening news from Beliard: cultists with some sort of elemental device caused serious destruction. The town was all but wiped from the map with an elemental water attack. The Seekers then resolved to take the fight to the water cultists. After spending another evening in the hospitality of Red Larch as the local celebrities, the Seekers trekked back out to the temple, made their way back to the city of Tyar Besil, and headed east to the Temple of the Crushing Wave. Lantian found that the bars that previously blocked the passage receded when he approached with the silver orb that Aerisi had dropped. Further on, Brenna was able to pick a lock barring entrance to the Temple of the Crushing Wave. This new section of the city was dimly lit and full of canals, underground lakes, and winding passages. The group headed off and immediately found a room filled with bugbears. Although they tried to talk the creatures down, they were unsuccessful as the bugbears were warned to be wary of “air cultist tricks”.

The seekers took a short rest and then continued on into the final chamber of the Howling Caverns. There they saw Aerisi working on a ritual with the priests who had retreated, along with a elemental bound to plate armor. Aerisi stood over a bloodstained alter onto which a gnome was bound. The priests stood around a giant thunderhead on a raised dias through which glimpses of an endless sky could be seen. Lantian walked up and shouted at Aerisi at which point she took up her gleaming spear and pointed it at them. A fierce battle raged, full of daring aerial attacks and lightning bolts. Lantian ran up and freed the gnome as Flint used Hunger of Hadar to enclose and damage the group on the platform. Aerisi flung lightning bolts as she flew around the cavern. The gnome (Leana) grabbed her rapier and began sneaking up on the priests to disrupt the ritual. Nessa went toe to toe with the elemental in her saber-tooth tiger form as Flint and Brenna rained death on their attackers. Lantian made a flying leap at Aerisi and pummeled her as they fell to the ground. Leana defeated the priests before they could complete their ritual and the elemental was finally slain, but Aerisi managed to knock out Leana, Flint, Lantian, and Nessa with lightning bolts. She then turned to the air node and began performing the ritual that the priests had failed to complete. Brenna sneaked forward, healing Leana and loosing an arrow. Aerisi ignored her and continued the ritual. As Flint bled out on the floor, Brenna’s last arrow struck home and Aerisi died in a howling whirlwind. Brenna went to her injured companions and healed them, but found that Flint had died in the combat. Lantian, still close to the portal, heard a soft voice emanating from the storm and walked forward to investigate. There he heard Ahtayir the djinni say that he had found Lantian’s father (who turned out to be a djinni noble) and had been given the power to grant Lantian one wish. Lantian wished for Flint to be returned to life which the djinni then granted. Leana then told the group that the portal to the elemental plane of air could be closed by throwing Aerisi’s spear into it, which Lantian immediately proceeded to do. The portal collapsed in on itself and the cavern was finally quiet. The Cult of the Howling Hatred had been defeated.

The Seekers made their way back to the pond to rest and recuperate their strength. The group took on various watches and observed several prowling priests searching for them. Then, on the last watch, Nessa saw the priests performing rituals. When the group finally stirred, they sent Leizhu and Nerise toward the surface before moving back towards the last part of the tunnel system. On their way, they stopped to examine the ritual site Nessa had observed. Flint used his eldritch sight to identify an elemental whirlwind trap. Flint blasted the trap with eldritch blast and the Seekers continued on through the tunnels. They made it across the cavern and disarmed another trap, only to find several priests waiting for them at the end a a very windy tunnel. The party charged ahead, but they were slowed by the wind and dust devils created by the priests. They priests, unaffected by the wind, wreaked havoc on the group who struggled to get to them. When one of the priests was killed, the others made a fighting retreat, leaving the Seekers to plan their next move.

The seekers continued into the caves, finding more wind and stumbling upon the lair of a black pudding ooze. The ooze literally got the drop on them and put up a seriously corrosive fight. They group retreated and then headed off to delve northward. They barely made it past a deep cavern, Nessa’s magic rope keeping Flint from falling to his death. They came upon a group of cultists doing some sort of ritual. The group approached and were ignored. Then Flint charmed the leader and ended the ritual. Flint and Brenna went off with the priest while Lantian and Nessa tried to talk the other cultists down as they woke from the ritual. They persuaded a few to surrender, but they had to fight several others. While they we fighting the initiates, Flint and Brenna followed the priest to a cavern full of large stone columns. The priest made a hand signal and told the heroes to ignore the bloodied captives tied to the columns. At this point, Flint had had enough and he attacked the priest. This ended the charm on him and the priest began to flee, but not before calling something down to attack the party. Then, a telepathic voice started laughing at Flint and Brenna as they went to release the prisoners. Nessa and Lantian showed up and suddenly a large gorilla-looking demon appeared near the ceiling and entangled the party. A second one dropped to the ground and began attacking. The party fought valiantly as the captives escaped. Still, one by one they went down until it was just Nessa left. She managed to defeat the last demon and revive her friends.
